New & Replacement Systems
Not Your Grandfather’s Heating or Cooling System!
Just like all things mechanical, home comfort systems have a come a long way since they were first introduced. And in the case of home heating systems…a long, long way.
Just for fun, here are a few of the earliest applications of central AC technology:
1917 -- The first documented theater to use refrigeration is the New Empire Theatre in Montgomery, Alabama. In that same year, the Central Park Theater in Chicago is built to incorporate the new technology: air conditioning.
1928 -- The Chamber of the House of Representatives is air conditioned.
1929 -- The Senate is air conditioned.
1930 -- The White House, the Executive Office Building, and the Department of Commerce are air conditioned.
And now for some real eye openers:
Cities in the northern Roman Empire used central heating systems c. 100 AD, conducting air heated by furnaces through empty spaces under the floors and out through pipes in the walls – a system known as hypocaust.
Similar systems were used in ancient Korea as far back as 37 BC.
Skipping a few centuries, Russian engineers installed a hydrological system in Peter the Great’s Summer Palace c. 1710.
The first steam heating system was installed in the home of John Horely, Governor of the Bank of England, in the 1830’s.
Between then and now, a “gazillion” new technological innovations have brought home comfort systems to where they are today…highly efficient, quiet, and designed for years of trouble-free operation.
What to Look For in a New System.
Properly sized for your home to avoid waste without sacrificing comfort;
A system that carries the Energy Star label. Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to help us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars — all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills.
A high SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating. SEER is used to measure how efficiently a cooling system will operate over an entire season. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system. Today, you can buy systems with SEER ratings up to 95%, meaning only 5% of the energy consumed is wasted. And that’s a remarkable achievement.
